One thing worth knowing: plasterboard ceilings are non-trafficable. Don’t walk on them, and don’t store anything on them — dead load limits are 2kg/m² at 600mm centres and 2.5kg/m² at 450mm.
The NCC 2022 Housing Provisions recognise water-resistant plasterboard as a water-resistant wall material (10.2.9). It isn’t an upsell; it’s a code-recognised material for the job.
The detail almost nobody mentions: clause 10.2.25(2) requires every cut edge with potential water exposure to be waterproofed, including the bottom edge sitting over a preformed shower base. Cut edges are where wet-area board fails, and they’re invisible once the tiles go on.
Also worth knowing before you plan a bathroom: shower walls must be waterproof to at least 1800mm above the floor, wall junctions inside the shower to at least 40mm each side, and walls behind a sink, basin or laundry tub water-resistant to at least 150mm above the vessel where it sits within 75mm of the wall.
Denser board plus the right wall system, not just thicker board. 13mm acoustic board runs around 12.3kg/m² against 8.4kg/m² for 13mm standard — the mass is what stops sound. Used between bedrooms, around home theatres and offices, on party walls in townhouses, and on tenancy separation walls in commercial work.
Choose it when: you share a wall, you work from home, or you’re building a media room. Skip it when: you’re lining a garage or a shed — the money is better spent elsewhere.
Glass-fibre reinforced core board used where an FRL (fire resistance level) is specified — garage-to-house walls, party walls, tenancy separations, service shafts, and most commercial work.
The rule that catches people out: fire-rated systems are tested as complete assemblies. Swap the board brand, the screw spacing or the stud, and the tested rating no longer applies. We install to the manufacturer’s tested system and keep the documentation for your building surveyor.
For corridors, garages, rental properties, schools, childcare centres and aged care. Combines fire and acoustic performance with a surface that survives trolleys, bikes and furniture. Costs more per sheet and saves more in repairs.
Garage ceilings often need a different fixing method, and alfresco or verandah ceilings count as areas of intermittent high humidity — which cuts the maximum span for 10mm board from 450mm to 300mm. A garage lined like a bedroom will sag. We spec these separately.

3. Hanging. Sheets are set out to minimise joints, fixed with the correct screw length and pattern, staggered where a second layer is required, and back-blocked at joints. Control joints go in where the span or the substrate change calls for them.
4. Three-coat setting. Tape and bedding coat, second coat, topping coat — roughly 24 hours between each. This is the stage that can’t be rushed, and rushing it is why joints crack six months later.
5. Cornice or square set, then sand. We sand with dust-extracted equipment and HEPA vacuums rather than pole-sanding into an open room.
6. Clean-up and handover. Offcuts and rubbish removed, surface checked under a work light, and a final walk-through against the level of finish you paid for. Then your painter starts.

Salt air attacks the fixings, not the board. Plasterboard manufacturers explicitly warn to account for sea spray corroding steel components and to select framing and fasteners accordingly. On the Bellarine and Surf Coast, that’s a specification decision made before anything is ordered.
Holiday homes have their own problem. Around 18% of dwellings across the G21 region sit unoccupied, well above the state average of 11%, largely because they’re holiday homes (G21 Region Profile). Recessed edge board has a shallow taper along the long edges so tape and compound sit flush with the surface. It’s what you want on any visible wall or ceiling. Square edge is used where the joint will be covered or where sheets butt into a set position. If a quote doesn’t specify, assume recessed edge on everything you’ll see.
Level 3 — two coats. For surfaces that won’t be decorated: above ceilings, inside service shafts, behind cabinetry.
Level 4 — three coats. The accepted standard for domestic construction, and what you should expect unless the quote says otherwise. Suited to flat, matt or low-sheen paint in light colours.
Level 5 — three coats plus a full skim coat across the whole surface. Required where gloss or semi-gloss paint is used, or where critical lighting hits a flat or low-sheen surface — a raking downlight down a long wall, or floor-to-ceiling glazing washing light across a ceiling.
The honest part: even a correctly executed Level 5 minimises surface deviation rather than eliminating it. Anyone promising a perfectly flat wall under critical light is overselling. If you have a big glazed wall or a dark gloss finish planned, tell us at quote stage — specifying Level 5 afterwards means re-coating work that’s already done.
Cornice covers the wall-to-ceiling junction and hides small variations. Square set gives a sharp, modern 90-degree line with nothing to hide behind, which is why it costs more and takes longer. Square set also shows framing movement more readily, so it pairs best with a well-built frame and battened ceilings.
